Dear Russians?

Yesterday I noticed that as many people from Russia read this blog as from the USA. I don't know what you Russians get out of this blog but WELCOME. I am not sure if I could make it more "at home" for you by putting up a picture of Putin. Perhaps better not.
We do not elect our President by direct vote. We vote first for a bunch of other people who then give their vote for a nominee in their party. We have only have two parties. Two parties that count. Right now the Republicans are going through the process of finding out who their candidate will be. We don't know yet. Then comes the convention. That when they know or will decide who will run against whom and they will also unveil the vice-presidential candidate. The Republicans have a convention and the Democrats have a convention. Different times and different cities so that Pepsi and Coke can make a lot of money. All this shouting makes one thirsty. Already they are accusing each other of all sorts of evil things. A big issue this year has been birth control. We have it but the fight is who is supposed to pay for it. Should Catholic institutions pay for birth control? So this has become a "freedom of religion" issue. We are big on this country on any kind of freedom issues but freedom of religion is one of our core values. This is why most people came here - initially - 300 years ago. The Catholic church arrived in Maryland and was free for a short time and then was suppressed. Freedom went only so far - then. Now we are free again in Maryland but many peoply have forgotton what being Catholic means, like our Governor. If you come to Maryland he wants to marry you right off the boat to whoever is handy and at the pier. It does not matter to him - boy or girl. Imagine the surprise when you land here. Going back to birth control. Catholics institutions don't want to pay for it. That why it is freedom for religion and not freedom from religion. They also don't want insurance company to have to pay for birth control for people employed by Catholic institutions because that would mean the Catholic institution would still PROVIDE birth control. No, no, no not in my churchyard. So you see this issue has to be settled before we will worry about Afghanistan and Pakistan and all the Ahhnies at the next election. And you thought YOU had problems in year country.
